Beatlemania! Is a well written, carefully researched and informative account of the Beatles touring years in the U.K. Most American fans are familiar with the many triumphs the Beatles scored during their Ed Sullivan television appearances, movies and US tours in 1964, 65 and 66. This book is fascinating because it takes readers back to the earlier years when the Beatles trekked up and down the UK, playing in cinemas (not stadiums) as eventual headliners in package pop music tours. WHAT?, a FRESH look at the Beatles? Yes, indeed. This author really did some original homework, and has come up with a rather completely new look at the busiest years of the Beatles! It was a very fascinating read! The big problem though, and you feel it from the very start of the book, is that the 'story remains the same' from start fo finish. The Beatles really didn't live those years at all, but were caged-up, pop stars, and NO ONE EVER really heard a note they were playing! That is basically the same plot for every single concert mentioned, start fo finish, but IT WAS SO FUN to read; to read all the old paper reviews, the fan's comments, the Policemen's (and Policewomen's!) recollections. And we meet SO MANY new, and old friends along the way. We get to know all those stars that shared the tours, and all the promoters, and everyone. I had to put the book down for maybe weeks at a time, for a breather, but it was always fun to get back on the tour bus (or in the Beatles limo) and get back on scheduele! Where next? SO many cool little anecdotes, and so much new, cool little bits of info. Nearly everyday, after reading a bit, I would get on line and do web searches for the stars, the bands, or whoever was mentioned, to give the whole book a real sound-track as well. We of course know the Beatles songs, but the Shadows, Tommy Roe, etc...what an adventure it was! And wish I could have even added a few bit, for instance, Brain Jones played sax(!) (and maybe sang and played guitar?) in the Undertakers, who are mentioned a lot at the end of the book. That one was NOT in there, but so many other little surprises are. Good job, thanks for the hard work, and unique way of collecting all the 'new, fresh' info! Yes!!! (One warning, the book does have a rather hodge-podge feel to it sometimes, as though it was many times edited, and re-edited,.. and some parts don't quite fit or flow, and things sometimes bounce around...but you will survive!)
